Entering the Season of Lent
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Christian season of Lent. It is a forty day season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday. On Ash Wednesday our foreheads are marked with ashes to humble our hearts and remind us that life passes away on Earth.
The distribution of ashes comes from a very old ceremony where Christians who had committed sins were sprinkled with ash as a sign of their penance. Later, all Christians came to receive ashes out of devotion.
While the ashes symbolize penance and being sorry for our sins, they are also a reminder that God is gracious and merciful to those who call on Him with sorrowful hearts.
